22. Distrusting God—not eating the fruit—was Adam's sin.
Eve also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. {Genesis 3:6b}
When Eve gave the fruit to Adam, he also ate it. We don’t really know if he heard and processed everything Satan had said, but surely, he knew that God had told them they weren’t to eat from the tree. He knew that God had claimed that eating from the tree would cause them to die.
So why did Adam also eat the fruit? Perhaps he also heard everything Satan claimed and agreed that trusting God’s word wasn’t the most prudent course of action. Or maybe he knew that Eve shouldn’t have eaten the fruit, but believing that she was going to die, he couldn’t bear to be left without her. Either way, he trusted more in his own ability to handle the situation than he trusted God, and so he ate the fruit.
Just like Eve, this choice to do what he thought was best regardless of what God had said was Adam’s sin. His sin wasn’t that he ate the fruit. He ate the fruit because he had already sinned.
