32. For God, Sleep is a temporary and immediately-reversible condition.
Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out. {John 5:28}
Since God imposed Sleep upon the human race, it should be no surprise that He is able to immediately and completely reverse that condition whenever He wants. There is nothing permanent about going to Sleep. No matter how long we’ve been in the grave, no matter how much of our bodies have dissolved into dust, in the instant of God’s choosing, we can be up on our feet, walking and talking again.
Even before Jesus arrived, God performed many "resurrections" through His agents in the Old Testament. Those who had gone to Sleep were awakened to live for a few more years in this world before going to Sleep once again. And when Jesus Himself was here, He proved that calling a person out of the grave is no problem for God. The most dramatic example was the resurrection of His friend Lazarus, who had been Sleeping for so long that his body had already begun to decompose before Jesus woke him up.
Sleep is no problem for God. He engineered it, He instituted it, and He has complete control over it. Nobody who has gone to Sleep in a grave is going to remain there forever. Before long, we’re all going to wake up.
