44. God's light is more powerful than darkness.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it. {John 1:5}

Here’s the thing about light. When it encounters darkness, the darkness disappears. In fact, while light is a physical property that can be measured and quantified, darkness is a nothing. You can’t measure darkness. In fact, it can best be described as the absence of light.

So, darkness cannot stand against light. It cannot overcome it, it cannot overpower it. In the physical realm, whenever light appears, darkness disappears. And the same is true in the spiritual realm. The Spirit of God brings the light of truth into our hearts and minds. In fact, we might say He confronts us with the light of truth. We see this best in Bible stories such as Pharaoh and the plagues, where God confronted Pharaoh with the light of truth in order to point out his spiritual darkness. Pharaoh began that whole exchange telling Moses that he didn’t even know who God was, so he wasn’t about to do what God said. But that changed rather quickly. God quickly made Himself and His truth known to Pharaoh, and Pharaoh acknowledged that.

That, in itself, is an incredible thought! Pharaoh, the most powerful man in the world, had been born in the lap of luxury and brought up to worship almost everything under the sun. His mind had been steeped in heathenism his entire life, but that did not limit God from bringing the truth to him. We should never worry that we or others have been led so far astray down some wrong path that the Spirit can’t reach them with the light, for bringing light to God’s creation is all the Spirit does. And He’s pretty good at doing His job.
